🦜🥦 A lot of new budgie and small parrot owners assume a full seed bowl is all a bird needs. In reality, an all-seed diet is a bit like living on fried food: tasty, but high in fat and short on vitamin A and calcium.
A more balanced menu looks like this: a quality pellet as the base, fresh veggies every day (leafy greens, grated carrot, broccoli, bell pepper), a little fruit such as apple with the seeds removed, and seeds as a side dish or training treat. Wash everything well, chop it small, and take out leftovers after a few hours so nothing spoils.
⚠️ Never feed: avocado, chocolate, onion, garlic, caffeine, salty snacks or apple seeds.
Birds can be suspicious of new foods, so go slowly. Offer a small amount each day and don't be discouraged if it takes a week or more before your bird takes a first nibble.
What's your bird's favorite veggie? Any tricks for winning over a picky eater? Share them with the flock! 🌿
