Bringing a cat into your home means seeing every room through entirely new eyes. Cats are curious, athletic, and remarkably good at getting into places you never expected. Here’s a room-by-room guide to cat-proofing your space.
Kitchen
Store cleaning products in locked cabinets — many are toxic to cats. Keep the stove off-limits and use a baby gate if needed. Secure the trash can with a lid. Check that the dishwasher is closed before running it.
Living Room
Secure loose cords with cable management sleeves (chewing can cause electrocution). Remove or hang toxic plants (lilies, pothos, philodendron). Anchor tall bookshelves to the wall — cats climb.
Bedroom
Check under beds and inside closets before leaving — cats can get trapped. Keep medications secured. Wash bedding regularly to manage allergens and fur buildup.
Bathroom
Keep the toilet lid closed (cats can fall in). Store medications and razors out of reach. Hair ties and rubber bands are choking hazards — store them inside drawers.
Balcony
