Adding a second cat is exciting — but rushing the introduction is the number one reason cats end up fighting or one hides for months. The scent-swap method is the gold standard, and it takes time.
Phase 1: Separate spaces (Days 1-7)
The new cat gets their own room with everything they need. Don’t let the cats see each other yet. Swap bedding between the cats daily so they can investigate each other’s scent without direct contact.
Phase 2: Scent introduction (Days 5-14)
Feed both cats near the closed door between them — they’ll associate each other’s smell with something positive (food). When neither cat is hissing or pacing at the door during feeding, you’re ready for phase 3.
Phase 3: Visual contact (Days 10-21)
Crack the door or use a baby gate so they can see each other but not reach. Continue positive associations with treats. Hissing is normal — only intervene if fur flies.
Phase 4: Supervised together time
Short sessions (15-30 minutes) with you present. Redirect any stalking behavior with toys. Never punish hissing. Gradually increase time over 1-3 weeks.
Key rules
- One litter box per cat, plus one extra
- Multiple feeding stations so neither feels resource pressure
- High perches so cats can observe each other from safety
- Expect 4-8 weeks for true comfort — some cats take 6 months
