When to see a vet immediately: 8 emergency signs in pets

As someone who works with pets daily, I want to share the warning signs pet owners should never wait on. These are the situations where minutes matter.

Go to an emergency vet NOW if you see:

  1. Difficulty breathing — open-mouth breathing in cats, labored breathing in dogs. Never “wait and see.”
  2. Bloated, hard abdomen — especially in large dogs. Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) can kill within hours.
  3. Pale, white, blue, or grey gums — healthy gums are pink and moist. Color change signals shock or severe anemia.
  4. Seizures lasting over 5 minutes — or multiple seizures within 24 hours.
  5. Suspected poisoning — chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol (in sugar-free products), lilies (for cats). Don’t wait for symptoms.
  6. Urinary straining in male cats — blocked urethra becomes fatal within 24–48 hours.
  7. Trauma or hit by car — even if they seem fine. Internal injuries aren’t visible.
  8. Eye injury or sudden vision loss — eyes deteriorate rapidly. Hours count.

Keep your nearest 24-hour emergency vet number saved. You don’t want to be searching for it during a crisis.
