Hand a hamster some seeds, look away for a second, and its cheeks have ballooned to twice the size of its head 🐹😂 Those are cheek pouches: a built-in backpack for carrying food back to the nest. In the wild, that hoarding instinct is what gets hamsters through lean times.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Don't clear out the whole stash every day, it stresses them out. Just remove fresh food that can spoil.
• Skip sticky or sharp foods, which can injure the pouches.
• If one cheek stays swollen, smells bad, or your hamster stops eating, see a vet.
